Vatican City, Jan 23, 2009 / 11:40 am (CNA).- Pope Benedict XVI has launched himself into the digital age today with the Vatican announcing that a YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/vatican dedicated to his activities and events at the Vatican is now online.
The Vatican’s announcement of its new partnership with Google’s YouTube coincides with the release of the Pope’s annual message for the World Day of Communications, which this year focuses on how to utilize new technologies to promote a culture of respect, dialogue and friendship.
Fr. Federico Lombardi, the director of the Holy See’s press office, described the Vatican’s YouTube Channel at a press conference today.
Currently, the Channel contains clips of Pope Benedict XVI delivering his Christmas Message and Blessing, the January 1 celebration of the World Peace Day and some segments of the Pope speaking about the advantages of new social technology. The footage for the clips is being provided by the Vatican Television Center (CTV) in conjunction with journalists and the web team of Vatican Radio (RV).
According to Fr. Lombardi, the new channel will be updated daily with one or two news pieces each day, none longer than two minutes.
Fr. Lombardi sees the launch of the Vatican Channel on YouTube as “a real and tangible example of the Church's commitment in the field of new technologies, to reach out to a global audience without regard for nationality or culture,” according to a Vatican press release.
Henrique de Castro, Managing Director of European Sales and Media Solutions for YouTube, who has helped with the launch of the new channel, expressed his pleasure at being able to partner with the Catholic Church. "We are honored that the Vatican has chosen to use the site to communicate with people across the world, and delighted that our community will have access to the words of the Pope on some of the most important issues facing the world today."
He also hailed today’s launch as a “landmark announcement” since it the first ever global religious institution to partner with YouTube.

Censored YouTube videos about Planned Parenthood
Los Angeles, Sep 4, 2008 / 04:21 am (CNA).- The internet video sharing site YouTube has removed four well-viewed videos which criticize Planned Parenthood, including some featuring Planned Parenthood fundraisers agreeing to process a donation from a donor pretending to have racist motives. The move has prompted Live Action, the pro-life student organization which produced the videos, to charge YouTube with censorship.
The Live Action videos, some of which were the focus of national media attention in the past year, were removed over the past two weeks on the grounds they contain unspecified “inappropriate content.”
“These four videos have received over 160,000 YouTube views in total with the oldest video having been public on YouTube for over seven months,” said Live Action Media Director David Schmidt. “Why are these videos being removed now?" he asked.
"It is discriminatory for YouTube to selectively censor material that clearly does not contain inappropriate content," stated Live Action President Lila Rose in a press release. "We will continue to apply pressure on YouTube until it restores the videos."
In the past, YouTube has censored other pro-life videos. In February 2008 an American Life League video which criticized a Planned Parenthood advertisement was removed on the grounds it had “inappropriate content,” though the original Planned Parenthood advertisement remained posted to YouTube.
On July 2, a CNA video investigating pro-abortion activist Eve Reinhardt was censored by YouTube. After pressure from the Population Research Institute and other supporters, the video was restored on July 4.
Lila Rose told CNA in a Wednesday phone interview that YouTube still had not responded to their inquiries as of Wednesday morning.
“We need to keep those videos up to expose the truth about Planned Parenthood,” she said.

Pro-life videos pulled from YouTube
CNA STAFF, Jul 7, 2008 / 03:04 pm (CNA).- YouTube.com has re-posted two videos in Spanish and English posted by the Catholic News Agency about the controversial abortion documentary “The Decency Gap” that were pulled from the video-sharing site several days ago in response to pressure from abortion supporters.
The video entitled, “The Decency Gap / Eve Reinhardt,” shows a meeting between Carlos Polo, director for Latin America of the Population Research Institute, and film maker Eve Reinhardt, who attempted to gain an interview with Carlos by hiding the true nature of the documentary.
“The Decency Gap” aims to promote the legalization of abortion in Latin America and is financed by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), the largest abortion provider in the world, Marie Stopes International and the Center for Reproductive Rights, as well as by the abortion organization PROMSEX of Peru.
The video features the encounter that took place several weeks ago in Lima and does not violate YouTube’s terms of use in any way.
Although YouTube has not given an official explanation for initially taking the video down and then re-posting it, hundreds of users expressed their support to keep the video online.
